TRACK AND FIELD SCORING

An Excel spreadsheet has been developed that makes it very simple to record the finishing order and scoring of points at a
Track and Field meet. It is particularly suited to the track and field or athletics sports day where Home Groups or Houses compete against each other. It has
been set up to accomodate either 4 or 8 House Groups.
The system is based on assigning a unique number to each athlete and have this number stored in a Lookup table. Each
House Group within a school creates their section of the Lookup table and these are emailed and combined. At the end of each
event only the numbers of the athletes in the correct finishing order and the winners time or distance need be recorded on the result sheet. The computer does the rest!
The special features of the system are:
- Calls up the athletes name and house group when the athletes number is typed in the appropriate cell.
- Scores points the correct number of points to each House Group.
- When a dead heat occurs, the placings can be altered from 1, 2, 3, 4 etc to say 1, 2, 2, 4 and the computer splits the points
and "Eq" appears next to the places in the tie.
- When a time or distance is entered and it is a record or an equal record, "Record' or "Equal Record' appears in red.
- No waiting around at the end of the last event while the while its results are compiled. The winning house is known
as soon as the last event has been entered.
- Very easy to operate. A control panel contains a button for each event. Click on a button and the cursor goes straight to the
cell where the number of first place is recorded. Other buttons navigate to the Progressive Total and the Final Result and back to the top of the spreadsheet.
- The sheet is protected. Only the order of placings and athletes' numbers can be typed on the sheet. There is no chance of accidentally altering
the formulae that cause it to operate correctly.
- Progressive points total is available at any time during the meet and the number of events that have been tallied is stated.
- The pages are formatted for printing back at school or at the venue if a printer is available.
To sum up, all the computer operator has to do is type in the athletes numbers in order in the appropriate cells of the spreadsheet and the computer does the rest!
Track and Field Sports days vary in the age groups, the events held and the number of runners that score points for a team. The files can be modified
to suit individual needs by negotiation. Contact us by email if you are interested purchasing the system and have it modified to suit your needs.
A section of the file is shown below. Notice that the spreadsheet splits the points for the two runners who deat-heated for fourth in the 100 m and it
signals the record run by Michael in the 800 m.
